Tax Reform

Michigan’s sales tax has had three changes in 90 years, representing the most inefficient taxes in the State, shifting burden to property and income taxes. The sales tax is one of the few mechanisms used to ensure tourists visiting the State pay for the services they utilize.  Giving local governments, who better understand their local economies, control over a portion of the sales tax (like Ohio and Illinois) will increase efficiency and lower tax burden on residents.

  • Effective sales taxes would vary from 4% to 10% across the state similar to other States such as Illinois and Ohio
  • Local governments can keep sales taxes low in residential areas to ease tax burden on local residents and stimulate economic activity in those areas.
